    Neutron Stars in Teleparallel Gravity

    In this paper we deal with neutron stars, which are described by a perfect fluid model, in the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity. We use numerical simulations to find the relationship between the angular momentum of the field and the angular momentum of the source. Such a relation was established for each stable star reached by the numerical simulation once the code is fed with an equation of state, the central energy density and the ratio between polar and equatorial radii. We also find a regime where linear relation between gravitational angular momentum and moment of inertia (as well as angular velocity of the fluid) is valid. We give the spatial distribution of the gravitational energy and show that it has a linear dependence with the squared angular velocity of the source.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1206.331

    Secular evolution versus hierarchical merging: galaxy evolution along the Hubble sequence, in the field and rich environments

    In the current galaxy formation scenarios, two physical phenomena are invoked to build disk galaxies: hierarchical mergers and more quiescent external gas accretion, coming from intergalactic filaments. Although both are thought to play a role, their relative importance is not known precisely. Here we consider the constraints on these scenarios brought by the observation-deduced star formation history on the one hand, and observed dynamics of galaxies on the other hand: the high frequency of bars and spirals, the high frequency of perturbations such as lopsidedness, warps, or polar rings. All these observations are not easily reproduced in simulations without important gas accretion. N-body simulations taking into account the mass exchange between stars and gas through star formation and feedback, can reproduce the data, only if galaxies double their mass in about 10 Gyr through gas accretion. Warped and polar ring systems are good tracers of this accretion, which occurs from cold gas which has not been virialised in the system's potential. The relative importance of these phenomena are compared between the field and rich clusters.     Instability of black hole formation under small pressure perturbations

    We investigate here the spectrum of gravitational collapse endstates when arbitrarily small perfect fluid pressures are introduced in the classic black hole formation scenario as described by Oppenheimer, Snyder and Datt (OSD) [1]. This extends a previous result on tangential pressures [2] to the more physically realistic scenario of perfect fluid collapse. The existence of classes of pressure perturbations is shown explicitly, which has the property that injecting any smallest pressure changes the final fate of the dynamical collapse from a black hole to a naked singularity. It is therefore seen that any smallest neighborhood of the OSD model, in the space of initial data, contains collapse evolutions that go to a naked singularity outcome.     A tetravalent dengue nanoparticle stimulates antibody production in mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dengue is a major public health problem worldwide, especially in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Infection with a single <it>Dengue virus </it>(DENV) serotype causes a mild, self-limiting febrile illness called dengue fever. However, a subset of patients experiencing secondary infection with a different serotype progresses to the severe form of the disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome. Currently, there are no licensed vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat dengue infections. Biodegradable nanoparticles coated with proteins represent a promising method for in vivo delivery of vaccines.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>Here, we used a murine model to evaluate the IgG production after administration of inactivated DENV corresponding to all four serotypes adsorbed to bovine serum albumin nanoparticles. This formulation induced a production of anti-DENV IgG antibodies (p < 0.001). However, plaque reduction neutralization assays with the four DENV serotypes revealed that these antibodies have no neutralizing activity in the dilutions tested.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our results show that while the nanoparticle system induces humoral responses against DENV, further investigation with different DENV antigens will be required to improve immunogenicity, epitope specicity, and functional activity to make this platform a viable option for DENV vaccines.</p

    High prevalence of Trichomonas gallinae in wild columbids across western and southern Europe

    Avian trichomonosis is known as a widespread disease in columbids and passerines, and recent findings have highlighted the pathogenic character of some lineages found in wild birds. Trichomonosis can affect wild bird populations including endangered species, as has been shown for Mauritian pink pigeons Nesoenas mayeri in Mauritius and suggested for European turtle doves Streptopelia turtur in the UK. However, the disease trichomonosis is caused only by pathogenic lineages of the parasite Trichomonas gallinae. Therefore, understanding the prevalence and distribution of both potentially pathogenic and non-pathogenic T. gallinae lineages in turtle doves and other columbids across Europe is relevant to estimate the potential impact of the disease on a continental scale
